K-Lite Codec Pack is a collection of codecs and related tools. Codec is short for Compressor-Decompressor. Codecs are needed for encoding and decoding (playing) audio and video. It is designed as a user-friendly soluction for playing all your video files. You should be able to play all the popular movie formats and even some rare formats.

The K-Lite Mega Codec Pack combines the contents of three codec packs:
* K-Lite Codec Pack Full
* QuickTime Alternative
* Real Alternative

    * Updated CoreWavPack to version 1.1.0

    * Added file association option for .ogg
    * Hardware acceleration is now enabled by default for the Cyberlink MPEG-2 decoder
    * Changed default MP4 splitter from Gabest to Haali
    * Improved file association creation on Windows Vista
    * Improved Codec Tweak Tool
    * Vista users: Please read the FAQ if you get "COM Surrogate has stopped" errors
    * Minor changes

The K-Lite Codec Pack works on Windows 98/ME/NT/2000/XP/2003/XP64/Vista.

Vista comes bundled with its own DVD decoder, so by default this pack does not install yet another one. But if you don't like Microsoft's decoder, simply select another decoder in the pack.

Regarding vista, there is pack called "vista codec pack" it is much smaller and faster to install, so do not use this on vista, my recommendation. I think its from same ppl, but not sure
